Dixie Chicks Explain Anti-Bush Comment. "Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas. ...

The Dixie Chicks have been among the most vocal opponents of Big Media. Now, because they had the courage to stand up to Big Media, I'm afraid we'll see them blacklisted, and gradually destroyed.

Was curious if you could tell me where I can send something to the Dixie Chicks. I just broke their CD I had acquired some time ago and I wanted to return it to them. Posted by: Chris, on March 14, 2003 12:03 PM

The Dixie Chicks were right on! I'm glad to say I'm not from Texas! It will take a long time for the next president to straighten out what this yo-yo is doing, and I admire the DCs for speaking up. We are tired of hearing what antics this "gun slinger" is up to, and jeopardizing our youth and the whole nation. If there was no oil there, we wouldn't be in this situation. No one wants a war. The Dixie Chicks comments were irresponsible. They complain of the negative sentiments that other countries have expressed toward Americans. Their comment did nothing more than encourage those exact sentiments. But, just as they have the freedom to speak, those that have helped make them successful have the right to not listen to their music anymore. People get the false impression that 'everyone' is anti-war. I'll say it again, no one wants a war, but many of us aren't that arrogant to think that we have all the answers or that naive to believe that things will just go away. The Dixie Chicks might have been a bit surprised that many people back in the states didn't find their comment appopriate. I'm glad that the people that are proud to be Americans finally took a stand. The ones that realize the president is in a position that none of us could ever fathom. If we can't support him, we at least need to give him some respect. Posted by: Kelly, on March 16, 2003 01:11 PM

Vocal or not, courage has nothing to do with dissing your country, or your president. You may not agree with the government and the way they handle things, but you must be loyal to your country.....I don't have the pleasure or the means to stand in front of thousands and use my celebrity status to voice my opinions, or i would call a press conference and use it to tell the dixie chicks, and the rest of the ratpack that if they don't back the country they live in that gives them the right to stand up and have the freedom of speech, then they just need to get out....i will pay their plane tickets if they will leave....let them live in Iraq and voice their opinions there...as far as i am concerned, they should all be convicted of treason, their visas revoked, and never let back in the country....as far as them being destroyed....well...if you are going to shoot off your mouth about certain things, then you need to be willing to accept the consequences that your actions bring...that is the whole problem now days, no one wants to take responsibility for the way they act....i will never buy another dixie chick record, and will turn the radio off when they come on.... thank you ba Posted by: B.Comans, on March 16, 2003 05:11 PM

Good. I hope the Dixie Chicks are blacklisted and destroyed. What they said would be considered traitorous in any other country and at any other time in history. They are the reson that many other countries view us as weak and cowardly. They betray the memories of the many soldiers that have died defending their right to make asses of themselves with ignorant comments like that. In the name of my relatives who have died defending this country I am burning my Dixie Chicks CD's and will never watch a TV show with them on it, will never watch one of their videos, will never listen to their music or have anything to do with them again. The sooner they are gone, the better for all. Posted by: Keith, on March 16, 2003 08:00 PM

This is so stupid. Everyone talks about their freedom, but soon as someone (Dixie Chicks) say something they do not agree with, they are ready to destroy them. All The Dixie Chicks said was they were ashamed The president was from Texas. Everyone is so happy that we are finally going to go to war with someone, that they attack anyone who is against war. After the Florida election it was ok for people to call president a thief, crook, or say they were ashamed of him beeing from Texas ( I am Bush supporter), but like I said earlier, now that he is pushing war against someone (other than Bin Laden, who I thought we were after), everyone is pro bush. Posted by: TRClev, on March 17, 2003 12:59 PM

I am ashamed she is from Texas or anywhere else in America. This is not how a true American is. You have the right to your opinions and to express them, and remember that without the freedoms we have, we would be. You just better watch it when it comes to making a public statement. I am one of the most oppinionated people I know and even I am not dumb enough to say somthing like that knowing it would be published. I think and feel she has ruined the Dixie Chicks and possibly any award(s) they may have the potential to win in the future. I hope it was worth it. Posted by: Amy, on March 17, 2003 11:46 PM

that's fine that the dixie chicks have their opinions and are voicing them, even though i think it is obvious that bush would not start war with iraq if there was any other option. and great for natalie for apologizing... but how coincidental that she does so after country stations are boycotting the dixie chicks and after they receive tons of complaints. (album sales dropping?!?! hmmm) grow a backbone. Posted by: whatever, on March 18, 2003 12:55 AM

The Dixie Chicks exercised their First Amendment Rights and I have a right to be upset about if I want. That's the beauty of our country. Just because The Dixie Chicks said it that doesn't mean that I have to like it. If I don't like I have the right to complain or boycott their music. I wonder, would the Dixie Chicks say if President Bush said he was ashamed of them. Would they have the right to be upset. Of Course they would. Posted by: Jim Stewart, on March 18, 2003 08:40 AM

I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM THE STUPID CHICKS EVER AGAIN!!!!!!! Posted by: LUCY LELA, on March 18, 2003 12:52 PM

I too will never buy music of the Dixie Chicks, but because I do not like their music. I love how you call seaking against your President (i am Canadian) as an "unpatriotic," "un-American," and "irresponsible" act. Those statements are the best. I agree, nobody should be allowed to say anything against the President; against the almighty. If he says we should drop nuclear weapons on Baghdad than we should go along with it, no questions asked. This style of democracy, you know, the fascisitic totalitarian kind, that you promote is truly the best way to go. Kill everyone now! Advocate Cannabalism! Eat S#$&. PS: I do not hate Americans, just the US government's foreign policy. Posted by: Andrew Chipman, on March 20, 2003 09:37 AM

It's real unfortunate about what Natalie said. She (and all celebrities) should keep there opinions to themselves and let their fans come up with their own conclusions. Taking sides is not a good thing for an entertainer to do. Unfortunatly, with so many uneducated people not understanding what's going on with this war, we shouldn't blame the chick's. We should however, blame what we call "Education." Posted by: Chris Hinde, http://yahoo on March 20, 2003 01:16 PM

I don't care who you are, you should have respect for the president of United States. I can't believe all these celebrities making all these comments against our country and government. These celebrities have so many people around them kissing there ass that they actually believe that their opinion matters more than your average american. Give me a break your just a singer...your just an actor. Your not a role model. Your not someone children can look up to. Doctors, Policeman, Firefighters and expecially our President now they are role models. Do america a favor and shut the hell up because when all of a sudden everyone in america stops buying your records and seeing your movies, I guarantee you'll shut up. The Dixie chicks are sure going know they made a mistake now that Texas is embarassed by them. Posted by: Matt, on March 20, 2003 07:04 PM

I think we gave Iraq every oppurtunity to avoid this war. If anyone should be criticized for going to war it should be Sadaam. Not OUR President who strived to avoid it and tried numerous other options before war. If anyone out there can watch a tape of 9-11 and not think Iraq made the first attack on us then they need a psychiatrist. And yet we still gave them oppurtunity to avoid this. Posted by: Travis, on March 21, 2003 07:52 AM

Good for the Dixie Chicks!!! They think specially the "Chunky One" that because they are popular and rich, they can say anything they want. Apologizing??? Hu! Hu! Hu? Why? Are you worried because your U.S. tour will go bonkers? Shame... Shame... Shame... That's just hollywood politics. We don't buy it. I don't like your voice anyways, it sounds like the chipmunks. Posted by: Pete Nordblom, on March 21, 2003 06:13 PM

As an American, Natalie does have the right to voice her opinion. But at the same time, with the conflict in Iraq and the terrorism attacks on our country, Americans need to come together in patriotism and support our country, our President, and especiallly our troops. With a touching song like "Travelin' Soldier", I expected much more of the Dixie Chicks. Posted by: Amanda, on March 22, 2003 08:25 AM

Well i know that what they said is stupid beyond belief...I find it funny that so many Anti War Protestors preach peace and then drag one guy out of his van for disagreeing with them, beat him and then loot his van....wow what hyprocrites...they say BUSH is a racist nazi...Saddam is known for setting babies on fire to demostrate to the iraqi people its not good to oppose him, gouging the eyes out of children to make the parents tow the line, gasing the kurds, invading kuwaite, killing his own son in law, shall i go on? The only reason a large group of people protest this war is not war..its anti Bush because he is being a leader who takes charge....its hyprocritcal how they way we hate saddam and support our troops and then do the opposite, these people go to anti war rallys supported by ANSWER and NOT IN OUR NAME...does everybody know they fronts for the WORKERS WORLD PARTY....a communist group that is in russia, who would love to see the USA fall, our soilders killed ect ect...wake up America and stand up to the socialist anti american groups. I did not hear them cry when Clinton bombed Kosivo WITHOUT UN APPROVAL! Posted by: TJ, on March 23, 2003 01:36 AM

I'm really so sick and tired of these overpaid celebrities thinking that "war is horrible" well, I'm sorry but do any of them remember September 11, 2001? I sure do. Why do you think we are having this war, just to piss you off?? While they sit and drink their cappacinos and eat their biscuits, my husband has to leave me to fight for their freedom and what petty things come out of their mouths which is BS, all of it. I'd rather spend time with my family then spend 10 dollars seeing a bad mouth celebrity on "The big screen" or watching them try to act their way out of a paper bag on TV. I wish I had all these MF's e-mail addresses or home address so I can really speak my mind to them. They don't have to worry that one of their families has to go out and fight for their rights or died from that tragic event. Posted by: Crista, on March 23, 2003 04:00 AM

Dixie Chicks need to stick to what they do, and just SING! All men should be given the chance to be free from the evils of the world...God Bless our nation for doing so. The people that believe our President is "jeopardizing our youth and the whole nation" are scared, cowardly, faint-hearted and are IN terror!!!! Our troops enlisted to be bold, brave, confident, courageous, fearless, valiant, cool, calm and unafraid for the people that are in need of help.....oh and for YOU cowards here in the U.S.A. Posted by: , on March 23, 2003 04:06 PM

The Dixie Chicks comments about the President and our country are unexecusable , to say the least. Some of these so called singers and performers are so full of themselves and the idea that they are above all and can say and do whatever they please. I would support them by buying anything to do with this bubble headed group. Posted by: carol, on March 23, 2003 06:22 PM

it's all fine and dandy that the Dixie Chicks have their opinions, after all, it is the right as an American, however, it was very stupid of them. In times like these we need to band together in patriotism, and keep our mouths shut if we have different views, especially celebrities. No good will come of it, and it can only hurt them and make us mad. And, just so ya'll know, I'm ashamed those Dixie sluts are from Texas! Posted by: susan, on March 23, 2003 11:15 PM

I find their words very disturbing. Do they not appreciate the freedoms they have in this country? Maybe they should do something to earn their freedom? It's real easy to sit back and spout off about it, but have they ever done anything to preserve that freedom? I am the wife of a man who gave 8 years of his life protecting the home soil for disturbed opinions such as theirs and the movie stars... so we could sleep at night without fear of some evil dictator like Suddam or Bin Laden gasing our families or bombing us while we sleep. No one "wanted" to going to war! Would you rather wait until Suddam killed as many people as Hitler did, and then step in after the fact? The Dixie Chicks (or Dumb Clucks as the radios here now call them) are allowed to voice their opinions, but if they chose to do that, then they need to be ready to accept the consequences, as well. Don't you agree? My husband served while Clinton was in office. What a joke Clinton was! The men (and women) hated him. Why? He ran to Canada back when it was time for him to "serve" his country. Then he became their Commander in Chief?! While my husband was away from home 249 days out of the year, Clinton did nothing but insult the military- the very military who guaranteed his ability for freedom of speech! (Sound familiar?!) As for President Bush, he is a man the military personnel are PROUD to serve under. He has served for his country himself! He has given warning on warning to Iraq. Not to mention he is having to clean up the mess of Clinton's negligence. If Clinton had done HIS job while he was in office (i.e. the US Embassies in Kenya and the USS Cole), do you really think we'd be dealing with this now? It disturbs me that some responses make it sound like the Dumb Clucks made a statement as simple as "I don't like the color of your socks." They not only insulted the President, but again, they insulted the great people of our military who sacrifice their home life everyday for Natalie's and your "freedom." When they insult Bush and the military, then they've insulted me and millions of other Americans. So... now we are exercising OUR freedom by "frying" the Chicks on radio!!! I guess they're finding out the hard way just how many people are "ashamed" of THEM now- and it's all over the country- not just TX. Believe it or not, everyone is accountable for their own actions- famous or not! A Proud American who is Proud and Supportive of Her President! Posted by: Donna Carter, on March 24, 2003 11:10 AM

To all of you who are so Anti-War and against President Bush, i hope you realize the only way you have access to express your views and opinions are because of great men like Bush and our military. We as a the most powerful nation have a duty to serve and protect the smaller countries, like our police system protects us. Innocnet civilians in Iraq are being slaughtered and raped just because and we would be doing a greater injustuce by just turning our heads. In case your history is not so great the French and rest of the world did the same thing when Hitler was in power early and just stood by thinking it would end and look where that got the world. It brought about quite possibly the greatest massacure in recent history. Unless you want to see that happen again i suggest you support your country and do your part to protect your freedom, instead of trashing the President and our military. As you critize the Commander in Chief, American men and women are overseas away from their families dying and putting their lives on the line to protect your freedom and your rights, so next time u go to protest or make a joke keep that in mind,...They are dying for you to do those things so i am sure they would appreciate it if u just said thank you and moved on Posted by: ryan, on March 25, 2003 02:47 AM

I am not for the lose of life and the violence of war.And think about it how did Sadam get the weapons that he has in the first place(hmmm) I wonder. To be concidered a patriotic person one does not have to agree with everything that Bush says or does.I love my country I am pround to be an American and like the Dixie Chicks just because I do not agree with the war does not does not make me anti-American.The Dixie Chicks are singer they are not politicians why should one not listen to their music because of the veiws that they hold.It may be alot of opinions that the DC have that are not like yours but what ever happened to agree to disagree being pro-Bush does not = being patriotic. And one of the comments someone said the no matter what one should respect any one who is president no matter what so I guess I should respect the fact that alot of our forefathers own slavesand the JFK was having an affair with marilyn monroe and let us not forget that clinton had sex in the white house this is real respectable but you know what it is forgivable the should be the spirit of america not that if someone says something we do not like we have to destory them is that not what terroist do duh 9-11. Posted by: erica, on March 25, 2003 08:21 AM

I'm a Dixie Chick Fan, LOVE their music to death. I won't stop listening as long as their lyrics don't begin to reflect anything negative. They have a right to their opinions. as we all do. But sometimes you just need to keep your opinions to yourself. As far as the President.... he isn't responsible for this MESS!!! As far as I'm concerned the Iraqi's are the responsible ones. I don't want to see us attacked so easily again as we were on 9-11. I want someone in office who is willing to take SOME action. I'm proud that we are a country that stands strong. That we bound together, even if it was short lived after the attack on America. I'd like to see that binding now. Stand behind our President, stand behind our troops. Don't make those people question NOW if they belong there... they are there and need our support. Not demonstrations... not traveling to other countries and trashing our own. Goes with the old saying... got nothing good to say... SHUDDUP. Posted by: Leanne, on March 26, 2003 12:00 PM

The Dixie Chicks should be proud they are in a country that allows free speech! But since they spoke up, they should be deported because they are guilty of treason! Tell me, isn't it sad that Bush got elected (maybe) by some people with this kind of illogic? Doesn't that logic sound like it belongs to a follower of the soviet union 20 years ago? I have to say that not all Bush followers are like this. Some who expressed their opinions on this page are simply not happy with the Dixie Chicks, which is their right as Americans. These people are reasonable human beings. You really have to wonder about the ones who want to deport all who have a negative opinion of Bush. They act like George DubYah is their king or something. I suspect they are the same ones who wanted to use nuclear weapons on Afganistan, and think that 9/11 was Saddam Hussein's plan. They talk of criticism of Bush as "Bush-Bashing" and even laughably "treason," even though they criticised Clinton. Such hippocrites. I saw an actress interviewed on the show "The View" recently, who was grilled by the hosts to tell her view of the war. She didn't want to lose her budding career, and said "Bush is doing the best he can and I hope everything gets resolved as soon as possible." When pressed about whether she thought the war was a good idea, she said, "I just want peace as soon as possible. I don't want to get "Dixie-Chicked!" In other words, she couldn't even say if she was against going to war for fear of having fanatics, who say they believe in a free democracy but practice something else entirely, verbally attack her. Once that happens, the cowardly networks fire you. Phil Donahue was fired becuase he had too many guests on who weren't gung-ho. The show Politically Incorrect was hoisted from the air waves because it was just that, Politically Incorrect. I guess the people who want to censor the Dixie Chicks would like to see a political-discussion show where everyone has the same point of view, there are no disagreements, and everyone is for war, regardless of where it is or who it is against. Or you could have opposing points of view, and then show them being deported to some country that doesn't want war, like Canada or France or Europe or anywhere in the world but here. Mike Posted by: Mike, on March 26, 2003 02:34 PM

Seems like what natalie said about the president has put an end to her career. career suicide I would surmise. Now if only the good people of God Bless America would find out that G.W's grampa, Prescott was doing business with Nazi's through the Union Banking corporaton which workded hand in hand with another Nazi bank in Holland in 1942, then perhaps truth is the first casualty of war. She is a very fine artist, Bush and cheney are total butchers. Just ask the press when your country jinvited the Taliban to sugarland, Texas for their chance to achieve peace in afghanistan so as to build their precious pipelines and oilwells. I dare you Yankees to find out about your bloody past. Posted by: Jay Barr, on March 26, 2003 06:20 PM

As a Southerner, though not Texan, I am ashamed that the Dixie Chicks have the word Dixie in their name. They are a thoughtless, traitorous trio of bimbos. I've never liked or bought their music. I suspect (and hope) that those who have enjoyed their music will cease putting one penny toward anything that benefits these traitors ... Posted by: , on March 27, 2003 02:34 PM

Ms. Maines, Just got rid of all Dixie Chicks CD's. Shame your last name isn't Yates...(if you know what I mean) like another Texas girl whose made infamous Texas news! Raymond Posted by: Raymond, on March 27, 2003 02:39 PM

Never will I buy another CD by you - you should be supporting our president in trying to make the world more peaceful and standing up for our country. I have traveled pretty extensively myself and have a few more years invested in life than you, and most of the world think we are loud and obnoxious pussies. Your comments did help either. I consider you totally anti-American. Posted by: Melissa Donaldson, on March 27, 2003 06:36 PM

The Dixie Chicks should be tarred and feathered. Perhaps it was just thoughtless stupidity that made them say what they did ... too bad ... it's treason ... adults should think before they speak ... Have they ever done anything for this country besides attempt to entertain? They are not even good at that. Thankfully, I have always thought their music stunk, and have never even allowed it played in my house ... Their absolute traitorous comments, hopefully, will cause them to lose what fans they have ... Ignorant Airhead Bimbos would have been a better name for them. Posted by: Lynn, on March 27, 2003 06:57 PM

To those who say, "What about freedom of Speech?" Well yes, that's true but tell me why she didn't have the gutts to say this in Texas or even America? Saying this makes our country look as if we are not proud. I'm a Texan, and like all others here, I am very proud to say so. On the other hand I am very ashamed of Natalie for her immature comment. She is not paid to speak of her political views. I am guessing this is something she has little of because of the childish way she expressed herself. Posted by: D, on March 27, 2003 08:24 PM

yes, i do think had a right to speak her mind... but she should have thought before she said that in front of millions of Americans! ....good luck.... Posted by: Lynn, on March 30, 2003 04:17 PM

No matter if the Dixie Chicks were excercising there rights as Americans. The country and our troops need the support of the people they are fighting for. Some comments are better left unsaid in times when all we need right now is to pray that our troops return to us safely. Why didn't Ms. Maines have the courage to say those words when she was on American soil. No she had to wait til she got in a foreign country. Frankly, I don't think she had the BALLS to say it here. Our troops need to know that they have OUR SUPPORT! Its our freedom that they are fighting for. But I think that comment is taking freedom of speech to its limit. I am ashamed that they are not only from Texas but from AMERICA. Posted by: Jan, on April 1, 2003 04:11 PM

I am not smashing any of the dixie chicks cd's, I believe in right of free speech which is what they were practicing. I love their music now and in the future and If thats what they beleive then good for them. Posted by: myra Grigsby, on April 2, 2003 08:01 PM

i think the dixie chicks can go right to hell along with the rest of you. instead of you sitting there acting like you know it all, you should be supporting our troops. our troops think and know that we are doing the right thing. talk to any of them. i think you people are very shallow. GROW UP !!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted by: kat, on April 3, 2003 09:45 PM

No Chicks my lady. I don't see why they said what they said , my guess they were playing to an un American crowd. Stay there "and PLAY on " Posted by: Clyde Roark, on April 4, 2003 02:41 PM

All I have to say is this... Seems that the Freedom of Speech that we are so proud of, that our boys are fighting to keep, only applies if you are inside the US... I feel that the Ladies had EVERY right to state their opinion and mind, the fact that they did it outside the US to me doesn't matter, as they are Americans and HAVE the right to speak their minds... As for what they said, had they said it here in the US, the crowds would have been on their feet with a standing ovation - Every person I have spoken with agrees with what they said. Whether you agree with them or not, remember what America is all about ... FREEDOM. Posted by: Annette, on April 5, 2003 12:47 PM

When she joined the group she had the attitude that the group was nothing before she came along. Then she got into it with Toby Keith about his Song about America. It was ok for them to come out with a song about killing a person cause they thought it was a matter that needed to be addressed. I think what her problem is she thinks she is bigger then she really is, and now she has destroyed the group. So I wonder what the other two think about her now? So after a month, the Chicks have decided they were just joking. Well, the jokes on them. No one in my extended family of country fans will ever spend a dime for anything the Baghdad Chicks are selling - including their effort to sell their disrespect for our President as a joke - never happen. To the Dixie Chicks (I cringe when I mention that name now) Natelie, Here's a little challenge for you... This Concert Tour that you all are on right now, I want you to take all of the Profit money that goes into your fat little Pockets and Donate every last cent to the families of the fine Women and Men that have lost their lives fighting so others could be free, they didn't get to stand in line to buy tickets to your show. They made nowhere near the amount of $$ you do by singing a song and using that medium to express your opinion, Don't forget to kick some $$ over to help rebuild a Threat Free Iraq as well. Don't let your Greed for Money get in the way of doing the right thing, do the right thing now, I know you believe in it . You've made that so evidently clear by speaking your mind. Here's your chance to make some peace or possibly halfway undo what you have already done..so do it. maybe, just maybe...your record sales will go back up and you can recoup the money that was donated. Step down off of that High Horse Girls. A Proud Texan Posted by: john, on April 8, 2003 04:28 AM

I AM VERY UPSET ABOUT WHAT THE DIXIE CHICKS SAID! I'M FROM NEW YORK CITY AND I WOULD LOVE TO ASK HER HOW SHE FELT THAT HORRIBLE DAY ON SEPT. 11TH. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT DAY! THE FEAR IN MY HEART. DID SHE FORGET THAT DAY? I DON'T WANT WAR WHO DOES? I DON'T WANT MY HUSBAND TO LEAVE MY SON AND I. MY HUSBAND IS IN THE ARMY AND IS RIGHT NOW FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOM. HER ALONG WITH ALL THOSE OTHER MISIMFORMED PROTESTORS MUST OF FORGOT ABOUT 9/11 AND THE FIRST TIME THE TOWERS WERE ATTACKED. THEN THEY WOULD REALIZE WE ARE DOING WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO PROTECT THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY. I'M PROUD OF MY HUSBAND. HE IS DOING THE RIGHT THING ALONG WITH ALL THOSE OTHER BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN OVER THERE. IT'S NOT ABOUT THE OIL. IT'S ABOUT OUR FREEDOM AND I BELIEVE BUSH IS DOING THE RIGHT THING. I WORRY ABOUT MY HUSBAND EVERY DAY BUT HE IS A SOLIDER AND HIS JOB IS TO PROTECT THE UNITED STATES. IF WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING NOW, WHAT ELSE WOULD THOSE TERRORISTS TAKE FROM US? THEY ALREADY TOOK OUR INNOCENCE. I WILL BAND THE DIXIE CHICKS AND TURN UP TOBY KIETH! Posted by: JESSICA ROSE, on April 8, 2003 12:23 PM

Well, that's it for me, the Dixie-Chicks are history, and it wasn't because she spoke her mind either, that's fine, but Natalie just wanted to be ugly and take a cheap shot at the president for a cheap reward, so now I've got my rights too. No more Dixie Chicks! Posted by: ray, on April 8, 2003 03:01 PM

I find it odd that several people have described the controversial comments made by the Dixie Chicks as "courageous" or commendable for whatever reason. The fact is, as soon as they realized that their presidential insult was going to cost them serious revenue they apologized -- repeatedly!! Is this conviction? Courage perhaps? No, absolutely not!! It was a thoughtless act which is now being followed by their apathetic wine. May they get exactly what they deserve. Posted by: Paul, on April 8, 2003 04:10 PM

Yes, everyone in America has the right of freedom of speech. It was obtained at a very high price. But what gave a big mouth singer the right to shoot her mouth off giving her opinion in another country, on a concert stage. She was being paid to sing, not put down our President. Just because she is a famous singer, her opinion is no more important than any other person. If she was just an ordinary worker, would she just shoot her mouth off a work , and say anything she wants to, without paying a price? Well, she was at work and she should think about the consequences of her actions, especially knowing how many Americans would hear what she said. And believe it or not most Americans do not share her views. The Americans that do not agree with them have rights too. We have the right not to buy their CD's, videos or listen to them on the radio. We can also ask our radio stations not to play their music. We have the right to destroy their CD's that we have and also tear up concerts tickets that we have purchased. Remember freedom goes both ways. If they don't like they can always go live in Iraq. No one wants war, but sometimes it is necessary. Saddem had 11 years to comply with the UN Resolution and he didn't. He was living like a king and his people were being tortured and living in poverty and something had to be done. The more time passed, the more powerful he was becoming and the bigger threat to the world. Yes, we could have given the inspectors more time, but they would have never been allowed to find anything. Then our soldiers would have started this campaign in the hottest part of the summer. Gail Posted by: Gail, on April 8, 2003 05:33 PM

Reading some of these posts, and hearing some of the rampant idiocy in them, is truly discouraging for me, speaking as an American who values my freedom and respects that of others. First of all, let's get something straight--not ONCE did Natalie Maines say anything negative about America, not unless you're stupid (or totalitarian) enough to equate criticizing a sitting President, during a war or otherwise, with dissing on your country. And if that's the case, let's call out all of the right-wing loons who were screaming for Clinton's blood during his eight years in office. Unlike Natalie's innocuous remarks about Dumbya, these yahoos were actually attempting to overthrow President Clinton with their flimsy impeachment nonsense. As for all this garbage about Bush being "our" President, he's NOT--the uneducated few who belong in the minority that voted for him can claim him if they like, but the rest of us remember that he's only President because the political appointees that his daddy and Ronnie "I don't recall" Reagan put into the Supreme Court decided to trash the rule of law and illegally install him. As for the troops being proud of him (LOL), I imagine there are a few who are willing to ignore the fact that our chickenhawk-in-chief has never seen a day of combat in his life, and that he went AWOL, walking away from the last 18 months of the cushy reserve position that his daddy scored for him in the Air National Guard so he wouldn't have to go to Vietnam like the poor kids were having to do; but I would hope that most of them know his track record, and have the common sense to detest him as a hypocrite and a coward. Equally detestable is the hypocrisy being displayed by the weak-minded followers who are whining and crying about how the Dixie Chicks supposedly don't appreciate their freedom, all the while saying that they should be forced to remain silent. "My country right or wrong" is what got the Germans into trouble after the Nazis took over, and if we decide to adopt the same philosophy here in America (as it appears we have), we're headed down the same dark road. Freedom of expression applies to everyone; it doesn't just apply to the people who agree with the government's policies, and it doesn't just apply to people who aren't celebrities. I find it funny that celebrities expressing their political opinions is a bad thing if they're "Hollywood liberals," but it's perfectly okay if they're right-wing talk show hosts or Fox News "analysts." Let the celebrities say what they want, and if you're going to criticize them for not having any intellectual ammo behind their pronouncements (and quite a fwe of them are idiots, Alec Baldwin being a perfect example), don't just level that criticism at the ones you disagree with. If you're going to boycott their albums and concerts, fine--just don't intimidate and blackmail the radio stations that I listen to into not playing their music. And stop calling them anti-American until you can produce one single thing they've said that corroborates such slander. Remember, opposing your President and his dirty colonialist crusade does not equate with being anti-American. And supporting our troops is not inconsistent with opposing their reckless deployment in a reckless war, where they will be killed, wounded, captured and tortured, just so Bush can repay all of his political donors with lucrative business opportunities in a supposedly "liberated" "democracy" where the liberators will be as unelected and as vicious in holding on to power as their predecessors were. In closing, as a Texan living in Dallas, I'm proud of the Dixie Chicks, much more than that drunken, stupid puppet currently living in the White House, and I'm as ashamed as they are, not just that Bush is from Texas but that the people of this state are so mindlessly duped by him and his party. He has "led" us into a reckless war which has alienated us from just about every nation in the world and stoked the flames for future terrorist acts against our country. He has "led" us into the deepest economic trouble that this country has seen since the 1970's, if not the Great Depression, and squandered the Clinton surplus. And he is working actively to undermine our constitutional rights by doing everything he can to give unprecedented and dangerous police powers to the government, and by pushing his narrow right-wing religious agenda. If anyone is anti-American, it's Bush, not the people who are speaking out against him. Posted by: Michael Nash, on April 9, 2003 12:36 AM

I think its dumb that people are boycotting them for having an opinion. I think it was brave of natalie to voice hers YOU GO GIRL!!! Posted by: Denise, on April 9, 2003 09:34 AM

Yeah, Natalie can have her freakin' stupid ass opinion. I wonder if anyone asked the other two D.C.s if they had an opinion...especially about their career & sales tanking because of Natalie's big mouth. Yes, in America you can have your opinion, you are free to speak your mind....but don't be surprised if the public (the great un-washed according to the D.C.s) pays you back! I have always been a D.C. fan. But alas and alack, I will NEVER buy another D.C. product as long as I live. No matter how good. No CDs, no concerts, nada! As my son serves in the U.S. Navy, fuck the Dixie Chicks! Posted by: Bette, on April 9, 2003 10:46 PM

this whole problem was caused by the fat girl in the group... i wish i had a nickel for everytime the fat girl in the group starts the trouble for the rest of the pretty ones.... wether its scaring off the guys who hit on her friends or falling on the buffet lines, its ALWAYS the fat girl causing trouble...why god WHY!!!??? also i just need to comment, you notice they didnt have the balls to say what they said on american soil.... Posted by: Adam, on April 10, 2003 01:35 PM

Everyone just needs to get over it!!! With everything going on, I can't believe all you people are so preoccupied with this trivial and stupid controversey. So, they are ashamed the President is from Texas, so what! I doubt Bush really cares what the Dixie Chicks think, and guess what, he could care less about all of you individual people out there that are defending him. He cares about what is going to suit him and his needs. Thats Politics! Anyone that says differently, is sadly disillusioned. Also, just because we are in a war, does not mean that the President walks on water...he doesn't have all the answers and if we weren't in a war right now, half of you people would be complaining about some law or policy that Bush is supporting. Just because the Chicks made that comment does not mean they do not support our troops. For anyone to take that leap and think that is the case, is just ridiculous. But, hey, all you people just try and make yourselves feel better by attacking the Dixie Chicks, after all that makes you a much better American, right? Posted by: Amber, on April 10, 2003 11:25 PM

I think natile needs to listen to that one song "have you forgotten". So many people protest the war like nothing happend a year and a half ago. And do you also notice how happy the iraqi people and soldiers are since we have come in and saved them from sadam. I also seen this picture on either the jay leno's show or david letterman that had saddam hanging out with the dixie chicks natalie was standing right next to him with her arm around him. I thought it was funny as hell and wouldn't be surprised if that was a real picture Posted by: David, on April 12, 2003 08:27 AM

Natalie can say whatever she wants! Leave that poor, ignorant girl alone. I'm just darn happy that I don't ever have to listen to her again (I won't buy the CD's and I won't listen to radio stations her music is played on, and....I won't ever buy a concert ticket). Sorry, you sour-pussed democratic leftists, you are in the minority now, and your group is growing smaller as we speak. Say what you want...please do....but so can the rest of us, and we can buy what we want. We can, which I did, also call Lipton and tell them we will never again buy their products if they continue to support the Dixie Chicks.....Free Speech....it's a great thing!!!! Posted by: Kelsey, on April 12, 2003 06:26 PM

Free speech. Yes, the chicks had the right to say what they said. It can also back-fire on you, depending on who and how many you piss off! I have the right to speak my mind about them in any public forum that I find, just like them. I also have the right to burn, break or otherwise destroy my personal Chick's CDs. Plus, I have not been hungry for soup in a while ! Free speech comes at a price...sometimes ! Posted by: Mikey, on April 15, 2003 06:06 PM

Mike Nash is a bitter uneducated liberal. Perhaps he is a drama student, or struggling actor. The war was forced on George W. Europe is out to undermined the USA and feminize the world. The Euro is a threat to the dollar, and the socialist/cowardly French and German's are doing everything they can to bring this country down. Wake up and quit being a soccer loving FemBot!! I not sure why people keep saying that the reason there is free speech in the U.S. is due to the war with Iraq. This war has nothing to do with free speech. This war is about the U.S. gaining more influence in the middle east. Free speech was given to the people of the United States in the Bill of Rights, but that was only on paper. Our freedom of speech was truly won by Civil Rights activist, like Martin Luther King Jr., and who killed for it. The Dixie Chicks expressed on opinion that I don't think is held by a majority of there fans and they should expect the heat, but the Iraq war has nothing to do with free speech or any other of our civil liberties. This war isn't about my freedom either and no I didn't forget sept 11. I would not be any less free if this war didn't happen. This is a war to gain influence. We are like the modern day Rome conquering lands and then enveloping them into our folds and that is what people are dying for, power. A foothold in the middle east. About the Dixie Chicks I hope they gain new fans. I listened to them for the first time after they got all this publicity and I kind of liked them. I think everyone agrees that everyone has a right to their opinion and everyone has a right to voice that opinion. Natalie's comments did not reflect the view of the majority of Americans, many of whom buy albums. Hence the backlash. Celebrities in general need to learn that their words are louder than the common persons in this country and carry greater consequences. Even politicians in D.C. who were against the war or disagreed with our President knew when to hold their tongues and that is their genre. Natalie is a singer, not a world leader, gov't official or a politician of any kind. I as well as the majority of the country feel that Natalie, as well as the other celebrities that think they have all of the political information, need to shut the f%#k up and stick to their craft. We as common Americans do not know all of the facts or have all of the Intel on Iraq. Nobody wants the war but at the same time we can not be so arrogant as to think we know better than the people on the inside. Therefore we have to have a degree of trust in our gov't and support our troops. I sincerely hope that this situation sets a precedent for all of the celebrities. "Give the people what they want" and what they want is to be entertained not to hear your political views Posted by: Tony, on April 21, 2003 03:37 AM

I disagree totally with the Dixie Chics. I just happen to be part of the majority. Did I see some where in a post that Lipton sponsors them? If this is true you may want to got to this site http://www.unileverus.com/terms/termsofuse.html and see who owns Lipton and other Companies! It's obvious to me that the Dixie Chicks wouldn't be apologizing if they didn't feel they were part of the minority. Duh.... I've never heard of anyone that apologized for being right.... Posted by: Ralph Barnett, on April 24, 2003 01:44 PM

Basically put the Dixie Chicks have the right to say anything they choose. Backlisting them for that one comment is pathetic. Everyone has made comments that werent the feelings of the large majority. Come on people be original and dont follow the bandwagon of pushing them into nonexistence. Plus i say the Dixie Chicks have balls to say that, not many celebs have big balls like that, example:Madonna(New Song) But it's also our right as Americans to express our rights, even to the effect of bashing our President or our country. I believe the President is fighting for oil. Where are the WMD's? Or what was this country trully founded on.....and please dont say bs like freedom and rights, try to find real history books that dont distort the truth. So I say RIGHT on Dixie Chicks I'm ready for your up-in-coming album. Posted by: Maria, on April 24, 2003 11:28 PM

The Dixie Chicks are fine musicians as so I was a fine veteran during the Iraq and Iran conflict in 1982. Because the UnitedStates was not at war with Iraq I am not eligible for a Disable Veterans Pension. I never shamed my Commander in Chief because of this; However, even though, I still have not got any Disability Pay from the Veterans Administration, I still hold a civil tongue when it comes to argument against the Bureaucratic ways of the Veterans Administration. I still fight for my Disability Service Connection and I do not hold my Commander in Chief liable, because I followed orders and did my job. Ms. Maines had no business making a remark against our Commander in Chief. She was wrong and she must accept what she said was not in good taste considering her artisitic talents. We do have the right to Freedom of Speech, but we are also liable for certain things we say that damage a person reputation or honor. I am a Disabled Airforce Veteran and I still fight for my Service Connection, but I will never shame our Commander in Chief. Now that she has apologized for her remark, I think it should be accepted as such and let's move on for brighter days. Aldo Rosado Disabled Airforce Veteran. Basically the Chicks are very misinformed as well as those that oppose the war. This Country is not at war with Iraq because their oil. Any one that believes this is either mentally retarded or very uneducated. Our leaders of this Country based their decision to go to war on educated decisions and information provided by Intelligence Agencies. They have attended Universities and served this Nations citizen to get to where they are. We will never convince those that oppose President Bush and his decision to wage war that this was needed. If those ignorant people would watch the news they would see how oppressed the Iraqis were and how Hussein ties in with the 9-11 events. This fine Country has given us the right to an oppion, so even Stupid people get an opinion. There is only two ways to deal with the unpatriotic citizens; we either educate them on why we are in Iraq and how it relates to us as Americans. Or we use President Bush’s statement to the other countries that opposed him “If you are not with us, you are against us”. If you don’t like the decision our President has made, fine, state your option and get out! If you don’t like it, LEAVE. Go to a nation that is oppressed and live. May God bless America and those that support our leaders, may satin have the souls of those that oppose. Posted by: Seymour, on April 25, 2003 02:42 PM

I Wanted to voice my opion on this subject, I feel that our children and ourselves should not have to listen to these people who remarks are there own personal views which others might not agree with and keep there opions to themselves and have more respect for the freedom and the county which they live in and respect the president of the united states for he is the man with the educational background & the knowlege. The musicians and actors need to take there fame and use it to sing in our countries time of need and actors need to give us some entertainment instead of there political views and oversights these things should be kept in their private lives just as any of us who have no fame would do and respect the world and our right for freedom don't let them ruin our freedom of speech by disrespecting our country and let those people who know why we went into the war when we did and all the other actions we have taken to make us safe and our children safe, we do not need another 9-11 and we need to remember and never forget. natalie maines needs to remember that with outspoken words comes the price and that will happen on alongterm basis. maybe we should be disappointed that she is from texas. her educational background of manners in the public needs work and thinking before she speaks would be the best thing i could ever recomend. for all probley b=never by another CD... Firstly, Mike Nash, amber - I agree with you absolutely, I think that what you said was well spoken and thorough... As I look over the rest of these Posts and see a lot of the remarks such as ignorant, stupid, fat, yada yada yada... We are called uneducated because we believe in what America is meant to be, has been fought to be, SHOULD be, those of you that don't believe in our opinion down & degrade us, call us ignorant, call Natalie stupid... seems to me that the uneducated ones are the ones that have nothing better to say than "you are stupid"... I for one respect the fact that you have an opinion, I respect that your opinion differs from mine... I don't agree with your opinion but hey! It's America!!!! I know that it's ok to have a difference of opinion here. I, like Mr Nash, *know* that there is a difference between disliking your President & turning one's back on the troops... Natalie never once turned her back on the troops... I feel that you need to realize that the rest of the nation has an opinion and I for one LOVE to hear the Dixie Chicks - as much as I love to hear Toby Keith on the radio - See, the thing is, if they are playing them on the radio, you can just turn the radio off for a few... what gives y'all the right to take OUR freedom to hear them away. I find myself disturbed by the amount of hypocrisy I'm seeing in all this... to me this isn't what America is all about. America is all about Freedom, it's what we've spent years fighting for. We should be able to have our opinions without being bashed, just like those that have differing opinions should be able to have them without being bashed. I've always enjoyed the Dixie Chicks music and will continue to be loyal fans of their music.....She is not the only person in the U.S. that has voiced her opinion about President Bush and the war.....And that IS what makes us Americans. Freedom of Speech!!!! Cant make everyone happy all the time. Forgive and forget. Lets move on! Posted by: Debbie and kids, on April 26, 2003 08:08 PM

I appreciate what Annette had to say. We are all entitled to an opinion whether it is for or against the war. I for one really oppose the war, but I still support our troops and our President. I am educated, watch the news, and keep up with what is happening, so does this make me Stupid? What the Dixie Chick said was her opinion, maybe it would have been better not to voice that opinion at a concert, but is still an opinion. We as Americans need to look at it from both sides, yes Hussein was a nasty, terrible leader, but why is it America has to be the one to tell them how to run the country? Who is going to pay for those innocent peoples houses to be rebuilt? Who is going to give all the unemployed Iraqis a job? I personal think our freedoms were never in jeopardy of being taken from Hussein, but I still think our troops need our support as well as our Nations leaders. I'm not from America, but from a Muslim Country (MALAYSIA). Like many have stated above about no one wants WAR, but to me the American and their Companians wants it. I do not support Saddam Hussien for his past actions but I DO SUPPORT HIM FOR TRYING TO DEFEND his own country. The US goverment says that they are protecting the freedom of Iraqi people by attacking them, that's bull.... Rember the 911 episode, what do you Americans feel when your home looks like ground zero...Sad,angry,mad and many other emotions right. Now what do you think about the Iraqi people would feel....what would the Palestine people would feel...They are not terrorrist as your goverment says they are, but they are trying to fight for their own human right, dignity, FREEDOM. By attacking Iraq, the Americans would not gains anything but lose everything. If your "president" is trying to give back the IRAQI people their FREEDOM then take off your hand from the IRAQI OIL. DO YOU KNOW that the MUSLIMS are 1/3 of the world population. THINK carefully........ Posted by: Bob, on May 9, 2003 10:58 AM

Most comments I see show - Blind patriotism - people following leaders without thinking - no courage to stand up if something is NOT right - people appeasing themselves - ... This is not called "civilized" - it is a shame... Looks like the Dixie Chicks (personally I don't like their music but that doesn't belong here) should have said: "Just so you know, we're ashamed all those childish, simple-hearted ignorant cowards are from the United States". Posted by: Frank, on June 1, 2003 05:39 AM

It seems that many of the people here believe that the U.S. gov. is behind what the "people" want. And I put people in quotations because I mean the majority. This isn't true. Please look at this site: http://www.opensecrets.org/ It shows just how much big business contributes to legislature. Just look at the statistics of the last presidtial election: http://www.opensecrets.org/2000elect/index/AllCands.htm To me, it looks like the best candidate doesn't have a chance to someone with more money. I know that still many of you will walk away from this an say, "But look what a great job Bush is doing right now." And I say read more about him here: http://www.opensecrets.org/bush/index.asp Here is another tid-bit of information for you; the U.S. patriot act, signed by Bush right after 9/11, removes many civil liberties. Just read about it. And now, congress is trying to more firmly cement this loss of liberty for U.S. citizens. Bush and congress are not doing a good job right now. Thank God for a site like this where people can voice their opinions about big business and the state of our government and be heard by many other. Posted by: Jonathan, on June 1, 2003 02:03 PM

I think that President Bush is one of the best presidents we have had in a long time. I am proud to have him as president. I would probably end up shooting myself had Gore won, mostly because I don't want to live in a place where I can't defend myself (anti-gun you know). Anyhow, great site, great viewpoints as well, you are very talented.. Posted by: Teslafreak, on June 1, 2003 10:52 PM

Oh boy, this is fun. Everyone voicing their opinions, I figure with the endless supply of time(yeah right) I have I mine as well post here too. First off, I am from oregon, born in california, and I see it this way: Where you are born can often have the same effect on every person that is born there, but not always. So one person from Texas gets in a seat of power and pushes for war, it doesn't mean you should be ashamed he is from texas, or that you are from the same state as him. Second, I do not support Bush, but I still respect him. I do not agee with basically anything he is doing, but I am not going to protest, because the fact remains like said earlier, that he IS in a place of in imaginable pressure, and it probably isn't the easiest thing to do. If the DixiChicks were born and raised polotician style, sent to legal schols and became "president"(since there's more of them it is a litle odd gramatically) they would probably come to a similiar conclusing, if not now than earlier, or later. Third, patriotism is good, but it isn't for everyone. I am not patriotic, despite living here in the US I disagree with and am ashamed by our government in many ways. Not ashamed because I am US and they are the government of where I live, because what I do personally has no corrolation with their actions, therefore I ahve nothing to be ashamed about. What I am ahsamed about is that people, which we all are and can not escape, could do what they do, sort of the "watching a movie and the actor fumble so badly that it makes YOU hurt soirt of thing". Fourthly, it is in our constitution to speak freely, on the news or whatever, yet it is also illegal to speak against the government(which the presidental office is a part of the government), but what they said is not a direct statement against the government, so they are legally not at fault. Like said earlier, they did what they did and they're aloud to, but I am wise enough to just let the government run amuck until it has to fix itself, because honestly, there's nothing I can do, not with out more effort than its worth:-) And btw, I am not going to buy a dixichick cd. Why? cause country makes me medically nautious and I prefer to avoid vomitting. See now, that was a direct insult, which if I had said the president, it could be treason. Again though, I did not insult country music listeners. People, or at least Americans(none of my Phillipine or South American friends do) tend to read to heavily between the lines. I believe it has something to do with a natural urge to protest, argue, and cause conflict, as seen ni this post, where everyone reads between the lines of one simple statement and get's all huffy about it. Have a grand day everyone, especially my nice friend from Canada about 20 posts up:-P Namarie! Posted by: Doug, http://www.elfling-irc.org/ramaloke on November 19, 2003 07:34 PM
