... but artists and songwriters are not being compensated in this settlement!

More news on Anti-Trust settlement for CD price fixing.

This article raises the interesting point that artists and songwriters are not being compensated in this settlement for damages they incurred because their sales were hurt by price fixing.

The headline of the story though may not be accurate. This was a settlement agreement, not really a court decision as I understand it - except I guess the court did approve the settlement.

What's worse , artists receive almost none of the revenue from CD price fixing anyway, as this chart shows: CD Price Fixing

There seems to be something wrong with this chart. I read categories such as "Recording Studio Costs", "Design and Packaging [obviously also costs, though it doesn't explicitly say so]", and then I come to: Wholesale Distributors and Retail Store Profits Come again? Perhaps it's unintentional, but it sure _makes_ it sound as if the entire wholesale and retail portion is profit, whereas in reality both of these, especially retail, has fairly high costs! So if the retail sector is getting $3.00 of the price of the CD, their _profit_ is probably a mere 0.30, putting them right in the same league as the poor artist.
